P5 English test papers

This page gathers Primary 5 English past papers from Singapore schools. At P5, English assessments test reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and composition – building toward the demands of PSLE. Weightings and format follow the MOE English syllabus [CITE: subject-syllabus]. Most papers in this set sit within the recent years. The page is for parents who want to help their child practise with actual school test papers, spot recurring question types, and identify areas that need more work before the end-of-year exam.

How to work through P5 English papers

Start with the most recent end-of-year (SA2/EOY) paper from any school. This will show you the full range of topics and question styles your child will face. Work through it under timed conditions. When marking, focus on patterns in mistakes rather than the final score. If your child consistently loses marks in comprehension cloze, for example, that is where you should concentrate effort. Next, move to earlier CA1 or WA1 papers to see how the syllabus builds across the year. For each mistake, talk through the reasoning – why a particular answer is correct and why the wrong ones are not. Use the answer key to check, but do not just hand it over; the discussion is where the learning happens. A parent should look at how the child approaches the paper: do they read the passage before the questions? Do they attempt every section? Is handwriting legible enough for the examiner? The goal is not to do every paper, but to use three or four strategically to build confidence and exam technique. If a child is struggling with composition, read the model answers together and note how they structure paragraphs.

COMMON QUESTIONS

P5 English questions

Should my child do all the past papers in this archive?

No. Doing every paper can lead to burnout. Pick three to five papers from different schools and different terms. The value is in analysing mistakes and improving, not in volume alone.

Are these papers aligned with the current MOE syllabus?

The papers reflect school assessments over recent years, but syllabus changes happen [CITE: subject-syllabus]. Use the most recent papers from each school, and check if the format matches what your child's school uses this year.

Some assessment labels here are different from what my child calls them – which ones matter most?

Focus on the end-of-year (SA2 or EOY) paper, as it is usually the most comprehensive. Your child's school may use different names for weighted assessments [CITE: weighted-assessment], so ask their teacher which terms correspond to the papers here.

Can I use these papers if my child is in a different type of school (e.g., SAP or specialised programme)?

Yes, the English syllabus is standardised across mainstream primary schools. Papers from 32 different schools are included, so you can compare your child's performance against a broad sample.
