Estimate before calculating
Decide the rough size and direction of the answer first. A discount must make a price smaller; a unit rate should describe an amount for one unit; adding two positive fractions must produce more than either starting fraction. Use friendly benchmarks such as one half, ten percent or a nearby multiple. If the exact result conflicts with that estimate, inspect the entered values and operation before trusting the screen.
Preserve the meaning of fractions and ratios
A denominator names the size of a part, so fractions can only be added after the parts have a common size. A ratio compares multiplicative parts and must be linked to a known total or known share before it gives actual amounts. Write what each number represents. This prevents a correct calculation from answering the reverse rate or distributing a total according to the wrong side of a ratio.
Use factors to expose structure
Greatest common factors help with grouping and fraction reduction; lowest common multiples help align repeating events and unlike denominators. The calculator reports both, but a learner should still identify a few factors or multiples by hand. Why can a correct answer still be unhelpful?
The entered calculation may not match the meaning of the question. A unit rate can be reversed, a percentage can be added instead of subtracted, or a ratio can be attached to the wrong category. Label values and state the operation in words before using the result.
Should a learner use decimals or exact fractions?
Keep an exact fraction when the question expects an exact value or when later work depends on it. Use a decimal when the context needs measurement or money, and round only at the end. The fraction mode shows a decimal check without replacing the simplified exact result.
How many values can the average mode accept?
It accepts between two and fifty finite values. A long data set may be better handled with a spreadsheet, but this mode is useful for checking classroom-sized lists and understanding how the total, count, median and range relate.
