    Translate before solving

    Name the unknown and define what it measures. Copy every coefficient, constant, bracket and sign into a standard form before entering values. For two equations, keep the variable order consistent. For a line, label each coordinate pair. A solver can process the equation entered, but it cannot detect that the equation does not represent the original situation.

    Preserve equality

    An equation is a statement that two expressions have the same value. Adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing both sides by an allowed value preserves that balance. When comparing your paper work with the tool, find the first line where the two forms stop being equivalent. That line is more useful than simply replacing the final answer.

    Read special cases

    A zero leading coefficient changes a quadratic into a different type of equation. Parallel or identical simultaneous equations do not have one unique intersection.     Why does moving a term change its sign?

    The term is not literally moved. The same quantity is added or subtracted on both sides, and the simplified result appears with the opposite sign. Writing the balancing operation prevents this useful shortcut from becoming an unexplained sign rule.
