    Statistics describes a data set without erasing its variation. These modes adapt MATHGPTNOW’s descriptive-statistics and probability patterns for school-sized data sets. A mean, median, range or standard deviation answers a different question; no single measure tells the complete story. Record what was measured, how the sample was obtained and whether outcomes are equally likely before interpreting the calculator’s result.

    Inspect the data before summarising

    Check units, impossible values, duplicates and missing observations. Sort the values to make the centre and extremes visible. One typing error can shift the mean and standard deviation substantially. The tool displays the ordered list so the learner can compare it directly with the source data before drawing a conclusion.

    Choose a centre that fits

    The mean uses every value and is useful when the distribution is reasonably balanced. The median uses position and is often more stable when an extreme value stretches one side. Report the measure that answers the question, and compare mean with median when skew or an outlier may matter.

    Describe spread as well as centre

    Two classes can have the same mean but very different consistency. The range shows the full gap between smallest and largest values; population standard deviation considers how far all entered values sit from the mean. Interpret spread in the original unit instead of treating a smaller number as automatically better.

    Distinguish probability from certainty

    Theoretical probability describes a long-run proportion under stated assumptions. Expected frequency multiplies that probability by a number of trials, but a real short experiment may differ. Check that outcomes are equally likely before using simple favourable-over-total reasoning, and do not present an expected count as a guaranteed result.

    Questions about the statistics calculator

    Why can the mean and median be different?

    The mean is pulled by the numerical size of every observation, while the median depends on the middle position. A high outlier can raise the mean without moving the median much. The gap can therefore reveal something about the distribution’s shape.

    Is range enough to describe spread?

    Range is quick but depends only on two observations. Standard deviation uses every value, so it distinguishes data sets whose minimum and maximum match but whose middle values cluster differently. Use the measure expected at the learner’s level and explain it in context.

    What does population standard deviation mean here?

    The tool treats every entered value as the complete population being described and divides squared deviations by the number of values. A sample standard deviation uses a different denominator and is not reported by this compact mode.

    When is favourable outcomes divided by total outcomes valid?

    It requires a complete set of mutually exclusive, equally likely outcomes. A fair die supports that model; an unbalanced spinner or historical survey may not. State the assumption before interpreting the probability.
