P2 Mathematics test papers

Primary 2 Mathematics marks a shift from simple number recognition to formal problem-solving with the four operations, length, mass, and picture graphs. Students begin sitting school-based weighted assessments such as topical tests, term reviews, and semestral examinations. This page is for parents who want to let their child work through actual past school papers to build fluency and confidence before each assessment round. All papers here are from Singapore primary schools, organised by term and year. For the current syllabus structure, refer to MOE’s official subject outline [CITE: subject-syllabus]. No paper can replace a teacher’s guidance on what is examinable in the current school year.

How to work through P2 Mathematics papers

Start with the most recent year available and work backwards, because older papers may test topics that have been moved or removed from the current P2 syllabus [CITE: subject-syllabus]. Have your child complete one paper under timed conditions – roughly 45 minutes for a full semestral paper – then mark it together. Focus on mistakes in addition with renaming, subtraction with renaming, and multiplication word problems, as these are common stumbling points at P2. Do not let your child redo the whole paper; instead, isolate three or four incorrect questions and create similar ones using different numbers. A parent should watch whether the child reads the question fully or guesses the operation from keywords. If a pattern of errors appears across several papers from different schools, that is a signal to revisit the underlying concept. Avoid drilling every single paper: two papers per assessment period, done one week apart, is more useful than rushing through a stack the night before the test.

COMMON QUESTIONS

P2 Mathematics questions

Should my P2 child memorise all multiplication tables before SA1?

The P2 syllabus typically covers multiplication tables of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 [CITE: subject-syllabus]. Memorisation helps speed but is not as important as understanding grouping. Work three to five multiplication facts each week and use picture arrays or counters. If the school has not yet introduced a table, do not push it.

My child keeps losing marks on ‘heuristics’ problems. Is that in P2?

Heuristics are formally introduced from Primary 3 onwards in the Singapore curriculum. P2 Mathematics is still very concrete: most problems can be solved by drawing a simple picture, model, or using number bonds. If a problem uses tricky language, read it aloud with your child and ask them to explain what is happening in their own words.

Can I use P1 papers to prepare for P2?

P1 papers lack the formal problem types of P2 – no multiplication, no length measurement in metres, and no picture graphs. They are only useful for revision of basic addition and subtraction facts. For proper test preparation, use P2 papers from the same term you are about to sit. The archive here organises papers by assessment round.

How do I know which topics are in CA1 versus SA2?

School scope sequences vary. One school’s CA1 may cover only numbers to 1000 and addition, while another’s includes multiplication and length. The best approach is to check your child’s school assessment schedule first. If that is not available, use Term 1 Review papers for CA1, Term 2 Review for CA2, and SA1 or SA2 for the semestral assessments.
