P1 Mathematics test papers

This page holds an archive of Primary 1 Mathematics test and exam papers contributed by schools across Singapore. P1 Maths is your child's first formal encounter with topics such as numbers up to 100, basic addition and subtraction, shapes, money, and simple measurement. The syllabus is guided by the Ministry of Education [CITE: subject-syllabus]. This archive is intended for parents who want to help their child familiarise themselves with the types of questions and format of school assessments, while building gentle confidence for the years ahead.

How to work through P1 Mathematics papers

At Primary 1, the goal is not exam drilling but building comfort with written Maths in a low-pressure way. Start with papers from Term 1 or mid-year (SA1) before moving to end-of-year (SA2) papers, as the content builds across the school year. Aim for one paper every week or two, not daily. When your child makes a mistake, avoid simply showing the correct method. Instead, ask: 'Can you read the question again?' or 'What was the first step you tried?' This helps them self-correct and builds thinking habits from the start. For careless errors, note the pattern — is it rushing, miscounting, or misreading? As a parent, look for three things: (i) whether your child can read the question independently, (ii) whether they write numbers clearly, and (iii) whether they show working (even drawing a simple picture counts). Don't fixate on the score. The value of practice at P1 is learning to sit with a paper for 30–40 minutes and follow instructions. Celebrate effort and small improvements, not just correct answers.

COMMON QUESTIONS

P1 Mathematics questions

How many past papers should my P1 child do per week?

One paper per week is plenty for a P1 child. The focus should be on building familiarity with the question format and building stamina, not on quantity. If your child finds a paper stressful, pause and come back to it another day or try just one section at a time.

My child cannot read some Maths questions yet. Should I read them aloud?

Yes, it is fine to read the question aloud for a P1 child who is still building reading skills. However, gently help them identify key words like 'more than', 'altogether', or 'left' so they learn to recognise these patterns over time. You can also ask them to point to the numbers while you read.

Are P1 Maths exams still held in all schools?

Recent MOE changes have reduced formal examinations in lower primary. Some schools now use weighted assessments, while others still hold end-of-year exams. Check with your child's school for their current assessment format. [CITE: subject-syllabus]

Should I time my child while they practise a past paper?

At P1, timing is not necessary. The priority is accuracy and understanding, not speed. If your child finishes comfortably within a relaxed timeframe, that is a good sign. Introducing a timer often creates unnecessary anxiety at this age.
