    What radius tells us about a circle

    A circle is the set of points at a constant radius from its centre. This calculator uses a positive radius to find area, circumference and diameter. Radius and diameter are lengths, circumference measures the boundary and area measures the enclosed surface. Keeping these quantities distinct prevents a correct formula from answering the wrong part of a question.

    Choose the measure the circle question requests

    Use it when the radius is known or can be found as half the diameter. Convert measurements to one unit before entering the radius. The reported decimals use the system value of π and are approximations. If a school question asks for an exact answer, keep the corresponding multiple of π in written work even though the calculator displays a decimal check.

    Radius and diameter differ by two

    The radius runs from centre to boundary; the diameter crosses the complete circle through the centre. Entering a diameter as radius doubles every length and makes area four times too large.

    Area grows with the square

    Doubling radius doubles circumference but multiplies area by four. This scaling relationship is a strong check on comparisons between similar circular objects.

    π connects circles consistently

    Circumference divided by diameter is π for every circle. A decimal answer depends on the chosen approximation and final rounding, while the exact π relationship does not.

    Follow the question's instruction. Otherwise retain π during working and round only the final decimal.

    Can the radius be a decimal?

    Yes. Positive decimal measurements are accepted. Report a precision consistent with the original measurement.

    Does this calculate sectors?

    No. A sector additionally uses its central angle as a fraction of 360 degrees. This page calculates complete-circle measures.

    Worked example: Find measures for a circle of radius 7 cm

    The radius is 7 cm, so the diameter is 14 cm.

    Estimate the sign, scale, range or likely form of the answer before calculating. A prediction makes an input error easier to notice.

      Area = πr² = π(7²) = 49π cm², approximately 153.94 cm².

      Circumference = 2πr = 2π(7) = 14π cm, approximately 43.98 cm.

      Diameter = 2r = 14 cm.

      Check circumference divided by diameter: 43.98 ÷ 14 is approximately 3.14.
